Pennsylvania State Representative Tells Teen Girls He Will Oppose Bill for Women’s Sports Protection

Pennsylvania Democrat Peter Schwier recently informed a group of teenage girls that he would prevent a bill aimed at banning men from competing in women’s sports from moving forward.

During a Republican-led press conference at the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg, Schwier, who chairs the House Education Committee, expressed his intent to block what has been termed “saving women’s sports laws.” This legislation had already passed the Republican-controlled Senate by a vote of 32-18, with some Democratic support, and seeks to limit participation in school sports teams to biologically female athletes. The bill is now set to go to the state House of Representatives, focused on preserving competitive equity and safety for female athletes.

Republican Senator Judy Ward, who sponsored the “Save Women’s Sports Act,” witnessed the exchange and later recounted her conversation with Schwier. “I told him I was embarrassed by his stance,” she said, recalling how she insisted he should feel ashamed. Ward highlighted that female Republican senators co-sponsored Senate Bill 9, indicating strong support for the bill among GOP women, and lamented that Schwier’s actions hindered the dreams of those young girls.

The Pennsylvania Senate is part of a broader movement among various state legislatures advocating for the protection of women’s sports in K-12 and college settings. However, the bill has stalled at the Capitol due to Schwier’s resistance. Republicans are strategizing on possible negotiations with the budget or other measures to push this issue forward.

Amid this debate, Pennsylvania Senator Lindsay Williams has publicly stated that women’s sports are under threat and suggested a reevaluation of gender divisions in athletics. The future of the bill remains uncertain as it awaits potential action from Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro, who has not shown public support for the legislation. A similar proposal was previously rejected by former Governor Tom Wolf.

In this climate, concerns persist regarding the disconnect between Democratic views and those of many Americans regarding this issue, highlighted by voices like Paula Scanlan, a former swimmer who has faced similar challenges. Attempts to contact Schwier’s and Shapiro’s offices for comments were not met with a response in time for this report.
