Following President Donald Trump’s suggestion to form a committee to tackle challenges in university sports, NCAA President Charlie Baker has expressed that he is “working hard at anything.”
The proposed committee aims to focus on significant issues, especially the complications arising from names, images, and likeness (NIL) rights in university athletics.
Baker has shown openness to any assistance the president might provide.
“I think the interest from the executive branch highlights how closely attention is being paid to the happenings in college sports,” Baker noted. “There are a lot of developments, and not all of them are negative,” he added.
“We really need Congress’s support,” stated Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark. “From my perspective, federal oversight is crucial for establishing a standardized system to manage and regulate NIL. Right now, 34 states have their own interpretations, which leads to confusion,” he mentioned.
Big Ten official Tony Petitti remarked that it’s quite challenging for university sports to uniformly address issues when each state has its own regulations.
“When someone disputes a decision or a rule from the NCAA, we often end up in lawsuits. Those disputes pile up, and we’re back at square one,” Petitti explained. “We hope that what we achieved in our settlement will allow us to stabilize the system with Congress’s assistance.”
Details about the President’s proposed committee remain unspecified.
