WWE Summerslam: A Historic Two-Night Event
This summer, WWE Summerslam will make history as the first two-night premium live event at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. For Zelina Vega, this event marks a significant homecoming.
Vega, the current women’s champion, grew up just east of Queens, New York, and honed her wrestling skills in New Jersey, particularly in Union City. “I trained at the Ace Arena in Jersey for a while,” Vega recounted in a recent interview. “I trained with Aji Lee there, and honestly, that time really prepared us for everything that followed.” It’s clear that the New York/New Jersey area holds a special place in her heart.
Vega recently captured the women’s US championship, adding another layer to an already stacked female roster on “Smackdown.” This title, a new addition following WrestleMania 41, represents her first individual championship. Interestingly, Vega had previously expressed a desire for the WWE to create a mid-card title, and now, here she is.
“It’s exciting to think back to when I was just dreaming of being part of this,” she told Fox News Digital. “To now be a champion, it’s incredible. I never considered a backup plan; being a champion was all I envisioned.” I mean, who wouldn’t feel overwhelmed by such a moment?
As she steps into Summerslam, Vega’s thoughts turn to the young fans who look up to her. “It’s about perseverance,” she explained. “You will hear ‘no’ a lot, and sometimes it seems like there are many reasons to doubt yourself. But really, the only person who can stop you is you.”
She emphasizes that unwavering belief in oneself is key to overcoming obstacles. “If I can stand here as a champion, it should show everyone that determination is what truly paves the path to success.”
Tickets for Summerslam, taking place on August 2nd and 3rd, are available on Ticketmaster. Vega shares her enthusiasm, stating, “This is our first two-night Summerslam—usually just WrestleMania gets that. It’s such a big deal for me personally, feeling a sense of coming home.”
