Immigration officials reported on Tuesday that over 20 undocumented individuals were taken into custody at a construction site in Florida.
The operation occurred in Wildwood, Florida, during a workplace enforcement action, as noted by local sources.
Speaking of Wildwood, it’s located in Sumter County, about an hour northwest of Orlando.
A video shared by HSI Tampa depicted agents patrolling the area surrounding a recently completed home. While the video didn’t capture the actual arrests, a photo seemed to show law enforcement actions taking place at the construction site.
Those detained were reportedly from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. Interestingly, some of these individuals had faced deportation prior, but it remains unclear if they had any criminal records.
The exact number of arrests has yet to be confirmed. In another communication, HSI Tampa expressed its commitment to identifying major construction companies in the U.S. that may be hiring undocumented workers and violating immigration laws.
Amidst these developments, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a significant increase in law enforcement, stating that more than 100 Florida Highway Patrol officers have been sworn in to assist with immigration enforcement. He emphasized the state’s proactive stance on immigration control, noting that Florida’s actions could serve as a template for other regions across the country.
In his comments, DeSantis criticized the current administration’s approach to border security, expressing concerns about the lack of enforcement since the last election cycle.
The local offices of the Department of Homeland Security and immigration enforcement did not respond immediately to requests for further information.
