Tim Tebow’s surprising links to John 3:16 in two major football games

Tim Tebow Celebrates Special Needs Teens at a Faith Event

At a recent faith event, Tim Tebow joined pastors Robbie Itterberg, Lori Tomencic, Jen Barlogy, and Laura Keithling to promote the “Glowing to the Night” initiative aimed at bringing awareness to special needs teens.

Reflecting on his football career, Tebow has had some notable moments, particularly on January 8th, which stands out in his memory. In 2009, he led the Florida Gators to their second national championship victory against Oklahoma with a score of 24-14. Fast forward three years, and on the same date, Tebow’s Denver Broncos triumphed over the Pittsburgh Steelers 29-23 in an exhilarating AFC Wildcard game that went into overtime. In that pivotal moment, he connected with wide receiver Demaryius Thomas for an 80-yard touchdown, clinching the victory.

But, beyond those important dates, Tebow’s experiences in these games helped strengthen his faith. During the 2009 championship, he famously wore “John 3:16” under his eyes, an affirmation of his beliefs. A few years later, following the Broncos’ miraculous comeback against the Steelers, Tebow learned about some striking stats linked to that biblical verse. He said it was a surreal moment—standing in front of the press, grappling with the significance of those numbers.

He recalled feeling overwhelmed by the media attention and was initially surprised to discover the connection between his performance and the scripture. He expressed that he found it incredible, and though taken aback, he felt thankful for the message he believed he received from God.

Interestingly, Tebow reflected on how his motivations for wanting to win sometimes stemmed from himself and possibly not aligning with what God intended for him. He admitted that wanting to succeed for validation or to prove critics wrong came from a rather selfish place. Despite that, he came to recognize that the real message was about love and faith, specifically through John 3:16, which he described as the “biggest love story.” He believes it encapsulates the essence of what the gospel is all about.

After leaving the NFL, Tebow and his wife, Demi-Leigh, shared their exciting news in March—they are expecting their first child, a baby girl. The transition to fatherhood marks yet another chapter in Tebow’s story.
