Homeland Security Director Christy Noem criticized Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY) for his defense of Kilmer Abrego Garcia, who was deported to El Salvador after being linked to the MS-13 gang.
During a session on the House Homeland Security Committee, Goldman repeatedly backed Abrego Garcia, who faced allegations of gang involvement as well as investigations for human trafficking and multiple domestic abuse charges from his wife.
In her comments, Noem reiterated that Abrego Garcia is currently in El Salvador, and if he attempts to return to the U.S., the DHS would ensure his deportation.
Goldman questioned Noem about the measures taken regarding Abrego Garcia’s return, to which she responded: “To see you defend someone like this, it must be disheartening for your constituents. Not advocating for them is, frankly, unsettling.” [Emphasis added]
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mark Greene (R-TN) has launched an investigation into Abrego Garcia’s alleged ties to human trafficking activities in Tennessee from 2022.
A convicted felon involved in a human smuggling operation reportedly informed FBI agents that he intended to engage Abrego Garcia to facilitate the covert transport of undocumented individuals into the U.S.
Abrego Garcia remains incarcerated in a prison in San Salvador.
