Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning review – Tom Cruise wraps up his world-saving role in an exciting adventure

It appears that the eighth and final installment of the Epic Mission: Impossible action thriller series, at least for now, resembles the last remnants of a highly advanced Apollo spacecraft. In this film, with its anti-AI themes and a stunning aerial sequence, Tom Cruise emphasizes the need for a true cinematic experience. He performs his own stunts, reminiscent of how Gene Kelly insisted on doing his own dancing.

The story follows the witty IMF leader, Ethan Hunt, who finds himself entangled in a mission involving his superiors in Washington, blending humor with his usual world-saving antics.

Alongside his brave team—Grace (Haley Atwell), Luther (Ving Rhames), and Benji (Simon Pegg)—Hunt faces off against a menacing AI dubbed “entities.” In order to stop this threat, he must employ a low-tech “cross-shaped key” from his previous mission to activate a device on a sunken Russian submarine, potentially creating a “poison” that could disable the AI.

This movie delivers a lighthearted yet thrilling adventure, peppered with nostalgic references to the previous seven films while still introducing fresh scenes featuring Cruise. Additionally, it presents a new character, the U.S. sub-commander Captain Bledsoe.

Interestingly, this is not just another Mission: Impossible film. In one standout scene, Cruise’s character clings to the wings of an old-fashioned blue prop plane, reminiscent of a dramatic moment from another cinematic classic.

At this stage, it seems Cruise embodies the spirit not just of Gene Kelly but also of classic action heroes, hanging on for dear life while defying gravity and time. It’s quite the adrenaline rush, really!

Mission: Impossible – The Final Calculation will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before hitting theaters in Australia on May 17th, the UK on May 21st, and the US on May 23rd.
