French taxi driver accused of stealing from David Lammy and his wife

French police have charged a taxi driver for stealing luggage and cash from British Foreign Secretary David Lamy and his wife, Nicola Green.

Last month, the driver transported them over 600 kilometers (about 370 miles) from Foli in Italy to a ski resort in Haute Savoie.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that Lamy and his wife were victims in this case, and the driver was charged after taking their belongings.

They also stated that there was no refusal to pay the driver from the Tottenham Labour MPs.

Sources from Whitehall noted that their holiday packages did not contain any sensitive information.

An investigation into a “commercial dispute” has been initiated in Bonneville after the driver lodged a complaint.

Boris Duffau, the prosecutor in Bonneville, informed the BBC that the taxi driver is facing theft charges.

He remarked:

“Following a police investigation, the Bonneville Prosecutor’s office has decided to charge a taxi driver, who is due to appear in court on November 3, 2025.”

“The driver faces charges related to the theft of baggage and cash belonging to Nicola Green and David Lamy.”

The driver recounted to French media that Lamy became “aggressive” when asked to pay a portion of a 1,550 euro fare, while the remaining amount was covered by the booking service.

While the fee was supposedly prepaid, the driver claimed he had to borrow money upon arrival and insisted on cash payment, as reported by sources.

According to the PA news agency, Green, who was speaking with the driver outside while Lamy stayed indoors, told police she felt threatened when the driver allegedly showed her a knife from his glove box.

After the driver left with their luggage, officials from the Foreign Secretary’s Office reached out to him to recover it; the luggage was later found at the police station, with a small amount missing from one bag.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “We completely reject these allegations; the fare was paid in full. The Secretary of State and his wife are recognized as victims in this situation, and the driver has been charged with theft. It’s not appropriate to comment further due to ongoing legal matters.”
