Very Striking”: Chris Cillizza Remarks That Recent Data on Democrats is “Extremely Revealing and Worrisome

Political Climate for Democrats Looking Bleak

On Thursday, Chris Cillizza, a political contributor for News Nation, indicated that new voting data paints a grim picture for Democrats. A recent Associated Press opinion poll revealed that nearly a third of Democrats feel “very optimistic” or “somewhat optimistic” about their party’s future.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Cillizza referenced this survey, along with another poll, which underscores the difficulties facing the party. “The degree to which Democrats believe they are in trouble is striking,” he noted. He mentioned that older generations remember the current sentiments of Democrats as reminiscent of past general election challenges.

Cillizza remarked on the significant drop in Democratic optimism compared to July 2024, pointing out a shift in presidential candidates from former President Joe Biden to former Vice President Kamala Harris, following a poor debate performance against Donald Trump. “Perhaps there might be a flicker of excitement with a switch from Biden to Harris. But at this stage, six out of ten Democrats expressed confusion, and optimism for the party’s future stands at just one in three,” he stated.

He also highlighted a sharp contrast with Republican voters, where 55% reported feeling “very” or “somewhat” optimistic about their party’s future.

Next, Cillizza discussed a recent Puck/Echelon opinion survey, which asked voters for the first word that came to mind regarding Democrats. The responses often included “liberal, weak, corrupt,” with “weak” being the most cited term even among self-identified Democrats.

“Weak was the dominant word associated with the Democratic Party. People seem to feel that the party is ineffective,” Cillizza observed. “It’s been troubling to witness the Democratic brand deteriorate in public perception, particularly since Trump took office in 2024. The continual association with weakness poses a major problem for Democrats,” he concluded, emphasizing that self-perception as weak can be detrimental in political contests.
