Testimony in Sean “Diddy” Combs’ Court Case
On Thursday, R&B singer Kathy was compelled to read an explicit message to her ex-boyfriend Sean “Diddy” Combs in federal court. Lawyers for Combs attempted to portray Kathy as a willing participant in the music mogul’s lifestyle. Combs is pleading not guilty to charges of federal sex trafficking and assault, claiming any violence has no connection to organized crime.
Prosecutors argue that Combs exploited his powerful position in the music industry to pressure Kathy and other women into lengthy sexual encounters referred to as “freak-offs.” While Combs insists that all sexual activity was consensual, he faces allegations of using his staff to facilitate illegal acts, including prostitution-related logistics, which are central to the federal charges against him.
The exchange of messages between Combs and Kathy was a focal point on the fourth day of testimony in the Manhattan courtroom. Defense attorney Anna Estevao read messages from Combs, while Kathy detailed her own thoughts regarding her participation in the freak-offs, which she described as something she felt she should do to keep him satisfied. Testimony from Kathy is set to continue on Friday.
Now 55 years old, Combs has been incarcerated since September. If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of 15 years.
Defense Highlights Kathy’s Messages
Kathy, known as Cassandra Ventura, expressed that she felt pressured to engage in these encounters to maintain Combs’ happiness. However, Estevao pointed out messages showing Kathy appeared enthusiastic about the sexual encounters, even suggesting she was always ready for more. In August 2009, when Combs inquired about future encounters, Kathy replied, “I’m always ready to go crazy.” Just days later, she sent another excited message, stating she too wanted things to be “out of control.”
Yet, that same year, she conveyed dissatisfaction with their relationship, stating she needed more than just sex from him. Estevao also highlighted a text from July 2013 where Kathy expressed a desire to be intimate with Combs before he left.
In a message from 2017, Kathy addressed Combs about a particular hotel encounter they had in 2016, where she was seen on surveillance kicking and pulling away from him. She mentioned wanting to keep Combs satisfied to avoid a scene before an upcoming film premiere.
Estevao brought up incidents where Kathy felt jealous of Combs’ interactions with other women, claiming he didn’t want her seeing others, even while he engaged with multiple partners.
Kathy testified that he would prevent her from being in certain settings as their relationship evolved from 2007 to 2018.
A Packed Courtroom Observes
The atmosphere during cross-examination was surprisingly gentle—not the combative tone one might expect. At times, it felt like two friends were conversing. Kathy, at 38, is expecting her third child and managed well under the pressure of being a witness. She showed emotion during questioning from the prosecution but maintained composure when discussing sensitive issues.
Typically, the Associated Press doesn’t identify individuals who allege sexual abuse unless they do so publicly, as Kathy has.
After the explicit messages were read aloud, Combs appeared relaxed at his defense table, seemingly unfazed as he folded his hands and crossed his legs. The courtroom was filled with Kathy’s supporters, including family and friends.
During breaks, Combs was often seen leaning with his lawyer, holding a pad of Post-It notes and a pen. He even engaged with reporters, asking, “How are you?” His daughters were notably absent from the proceedings that day.
Defense Comparison to a “Swingers’ Lifestyle”
Prosecutors emphasized Combs’ interests in Kathy being intimate with other men, but Kathy testified that she often found herself watching him with other women, which he characterized as part of the “Swinger Lifestyle.” Estevao inquired whether she believed Freak-Offs fit into that framework, to which Kathy replied that, while sexually both may seem similar, they were fundamentally different.
Kathy described Combs as having an obsession with voyeurism, asserting he was in total control during these encounters. She noted that Freak-Offs typically occurred in dark hotel rooms, contrasting with the more public parties Combs would host with celebrity guests.
She also shared that she would sometimes require IV fluids to recover from the encounters, and ultimately struggled with an opioid addiction. This testimony came after describing traumatic experiences and violence that occurred during their relationship.
Kathy’s Lawsuit Triggers Criminal Investigation
Kathy claimed during her testimony that Combs assaulted her following their breakup in 2018, using threats to control her by holding onto compromising footage from their encounters. She filed a lawsuit in 2023, alleging years of physical and sexual abuse, which was settled for $20 million within hours of its filing— a fact that emerged during Wednesday’s discussions. Nonetheless, multiple similar claims against Combs from other women are ongoing, with criminal investigations into him culminating in this trial.
