Trump seeks to meet with Putin quickly to talk about the Ukraine conflict.

Trump Expresses Interest in Meeting Putin Over Ukraine Conflict

On Friday, President Donald Trump expressed to reporters in Abu Dhabi that he would like to sit down with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the ongoing war in Ukraine. Speaking during his four-day tour of the Middle East, Trump stated, “I think it’s time for us to do that.” Previously, he indicated that a meeting between the two leaders is crucial for breaking the current deadlock.

In the next week, Putin is scheduled to engage in peace negotiations in Istanbul, following an invitation from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump added that he doubts Putin would attend the talks without his own presence. “They all said Putin would go, and if I didn’t go, I guarantee Putin wouldn’t go,” Trump remarked, acknowledging the complex dynamics at play.

When pressed for a timeline regarding a potential meeting, Trump replied, “As soon as I can set it up.” Instead of face-to-face discussions between Zelensky and Putin, the Ukrainian delegation, led by Defense Minister Rastem Umerov, is expected to meet with a lower-level Russian team headed by Putin’s aide, Vladimir Medinsky.

Observers remain skeptical about the chances of immediate progress in the discussions that aim to end the three-year conflict. The two sides continue to diverge on the terms for a resolution. Ukraine has shown willingness to accept a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the U.S. and Europe, but Putin has largely dismissed it, attaching several conditions. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials and Western military analysts report that Russian troops may be gearing up for renewed military offensives.

After Putin declined Zelensky’s invitation for a high-level meeting in Turkey, the Ukrainian leader criticized Moscow for what he perceived as a lack of serious commitment to negotiations, referring to the Russian delegation as “theatre props.” Despite these tensions, Zelensky is still sending his team to the Istanbul meeting this Friday, indicating a desire to push for peace efforts amid ongoing diplomatic maneuvering between Kyiv and Moscow.

Furthermore, a Russian delegation comprising several senior officials is expected at the talks. On the American side, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed a lack of optimism, stating that significant breakthroughs are unlikely without Trump directly engaging with Putin. “There’s no high expectations of what will happen tomorrow,” Rubio noted, emphasizing that the path forward may rest with Trump and Putin’s dialogue.
