Major Prisoner Exchange Agreed Upon by Russia and Ukraine
Russia and Ukraine have come to an agreement for the largest prisoner exchange seen since the war began, as reported by the Associated Press on Friday.
Vladimir Medinsky, part of the Russian delegation, stated that the two nations will exchange 1,000 prisoners during the first direct peace talks since the onset of the war, which took place in Turkey in 2022. Furthermore, representatives from both sides have proposed drafting comprehensive ceasefire agreements for future discussions.
However, the talks were brief, lasting only two hours, after Ukrainian officials accused Russia of making “unacceptable requests,” specifically regarding the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from key frontline areas, according to an anonymous source cited by the Associated Press.
The ongoing conflict has spanned three years and has claimed countless lives on both sides. The situation has remained largely static since the initial Russian invasion in 2022. President Donald Trump has emphasized pursuing peace in the region as a central focus of his foreign policy during his second term.
Neither the Ukrainian Embassy nor the Russian Foreign Ministry responded right away to inquiries from the press.
