‘I’m a Woman Except on Days When I’m a Man’

Lorde Expresses Gender Identity in New Album

Lorde, the pop star hailing from New Zealand, recently shared her gender identity, describing herself as a woman, except for certain days when she identifies as a man. In an interview with Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos, she discussed how the lyrics of the opening track of her upcoming album, “virgin,” reflect her experiences.

The lyrics touch on this fluidity: “One day, I’m a woman / I’m a man,” which encapsulates her complex feelings about gender. Spanos asked her about her current identification and any changes she might have experienced. Lorde recounted a conversation with her friend Chappell Roan, where she explained her identity: “I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me who really resists boxing it.”

According to Spanos, Lorde still identifies as a cis woman and uses the same pronouns, but she feels a deep connection to the idea of being “gender-centered.” This perspective allows her to embrace a sense of fluidity in her expression, akin to her teenage years when her social circle included more boys.

During the interview, Lorde also commended her collaborators, particularly the producer Jim et Stuck, for their open discussions about gender. In a personal moment, Spanos shared that Lorde had tried on men’s jeans at a clothing store, taking photos to get feedback from her friends. This exploration marked a shift in her understanding of gender.

At the Met Gala, Lorde articulated her feelings about gender attire, noting that her custom outfit by Tom Brown represented her identity. “I feel like men and women,” she said, adding that her style has become a form of self-expression.

Through these evolving discussions, Lorde highlights the complexity of gender identity, capturing what it means to navigate this spectrum in both her personal life and art.
