Baptism Event in California Gathers Thousands
Three years ago, Pastor Mark France felt a call from God to initiate a large-scale baptism event in California, a state where many had lost touch with their faith. He aimed for this event to inspire significant spiritual movements. The first of the 2023 “Baptismus” was held at Pirates Cove in Corona del Mar, where over 4,000 people were baptized. The following day, around 6,000 individuals were immersed at Huntington Beach, culminating in a remarkable 7,752 baptisms during this year’s event. This might be the largest one-day baptism in American history.
Hundreds of churches collaborated for this gathering, which France describes as almost indescribable. “It’s hard to find the right words. You feel as if you’re living right out of the pages of the Bible,” he remarked.
France is now gearing up for an even larger event called Baptize America, scheduled for Pentecost Sunday, June 8. This initiative aims to gather thousands of churches across all 50 states for the biggest synchronized baptism day in history. Unlike previous events which occurred in one location, Baptize America will unfold in various congregations, aiming to unify believers in faith.
“Where God’s people are united, He commands blessings,” France shared, referencing a scripture that highlights a diversity of denominations coming together, from prominent Baptist to evangelical and Pentecostal churches.
Pastor France sees a renewed interest in faith, particularly among younger generations. He noted that university campuses around the world are experiencing an influx of worship, and Gen Z is increasingly seeking spiritual fulfillment—a significant shift, especially in what may seem like secular areas.
Reflecting on this year’s California baptism, despite less-than-ideal weather—morning rain and a chilly atmosphere—over 7,700 people participated. “You literally witness lives transform before your eyes,” he stated, describing the scene of individuals crying, hugging their families, and praying together.
Pastor France believes America is on the verge of a revival. He drew parallels between the current landscape and the atmosphere of the Jesus Revolution in the 1960s and 70s. “It feels like God is drawing generations back to Him,” he commented, expressing hope for a significant spiritual awakening between now and 2030.
Worship leader Kari Jobe, who performed during this year’s baptism, reflected on the event’s significance on social media, stating, “God is moving. These are special days we’re living in.”
Pastor France attributes the current spiritual momentum to the challenges brought about by the pandemic, which has heightened feelings of loneliness and despair, suggesting these struggles often precede revival. “Revival never comes from easy times; it emerges from pain and turbulence,” he emphasized, asserting that, perhaps, the nation is entering a crucial phase of transformation.
