Did Derek Carr consider parting ways with the Saints before his unexpected retirement announcement earlier this month?
This theory gained traction following a recent report from ESPN, which noted that the 34-year-old quarterback hinted he could “play for a new team” amid whispers of issues surrounding free agency in March.
ESPN mentioned that Carr’s representatives reached out to at least two teams interested in the veteran quarterback.
Despite forming connections within the organization, including with offensive coordinator Clint Kubiak and quarterback Andrew Gianocco, challenges appeared to be brewing.
ESPN also highlighted a potential friction point regarding the Saints’ plans to restructure Carr’s contract. At the time of his departure from the league, he was entering the third year of a four-year, $150 million deal.
This was set to be the concluding season offering guaranteed money, creating an atmosphere ripe for a split in 2026.
As discussions emerged about potential career-ending injuries, Carr’s camp seemed to be in talks with other teams, alongside discussions related to “immediate division talk.”
Weeks ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, Carr’s situation was complicated by a shoulder injury that cast doubt on his availability for the season.
The Saints had also drafted Louisville QB Tyler Schaff in the second round, which further muddied the waters.
Just a few weeks later, rather than going through surgery, Carr chose to retire after 11 seasons in the NFL.
In a statement, he expressed his struggle to find the right words to convey gratitude to his teammates, coaches, management, owners, and especially the fans who made this journey special. “Your unwavering support has meant the world to us,” Carr said.
By retiring, he leaves behind $30 million but can still keep a $10 million roster bonus that was paid in March.
Carr spent the first nine years of his career with the Raiders before joining the Saints for the past two seasons.
Last year, he recorded 2,145 yards and 15 touchdowns with only five interceptions across 10 games, hampered by a shoulder injury.
Throughout his career, Carr amassed 41,245 passing yards, 257 touchdowns, and 112 interceptions over 169 games.
