James Comey’s Shells and Political Statements
Why does James Comey engage with political statements through the medium of shells? Recently, the former FBI director posted an Instagram picture featuring the number “8647,” which he suggested refers to “probably the 47th President.” He captioned the now-deleted photo as “Cool Shell Formation.”

However, Comey later issued an apology, clarifying, “I posted some pics of shells I’d seen on the beach walk before. I thought this was a political message. I couldn’t associate those numbers with any kind of violence, so I deleted the post.”
Some might find it hard to accept that reasoning.
Unfortunately for Comey, notable figures like Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem and FBI Director Kash Patel, along with other Trump administration officials, are skeptical. There are calls for an investigation into his comments, especially regarding any insinuation of violence against Trump as he tried to appeal to his liberal followers in a trendy way.
This isn’t the first time Comey has connected shell imagery with political statements. Back in October 2024, he left a shell attributed to Kamala Harris on the beach, seemingly for social media attention, complete with poor captions.

Putting aside questions about whether Comey intended to incite violence, one has to wonder: why did he decide to arrange and photograph shells in the first place?
Comey is, after all, an adult. It may be a bit embarrassing if he felt the need to arrange shells like a child would. And then, to share it on social media? That certainly raises more eyebrows.
