49ers Secure Quarterback for the Future
The San Francisco 49ers have officially secured their quarterback, Brock Purdy, with a new five-year extension valued at $265 million, as reported on Friday.
This deal makes Purdy the richest player in the franchise’s history.
Additionally, sources have indicated that his contract includes a substantial signing bonus of $181 million.
With this extension, Purdy’s average annual salary will come in at around $53 million, ranking him as the seventh-highest paid quarterback in the league.
At just 25 years old, he’s entering the final year of his rookie deal, which means he’s set to remain with the 49ers through at least the 2030 season.
This news comes less than two months after general manager John Lynch expressed optimism about finalizing a new contract for the young quarterback.
“I think we’re going to get the deal done,” Lynch mentioned back in March, sounding confident about the negotiations.
Purdy’s journey has been quite remarkable. Just three years ago, he was a little-known player, selected as the last pick—262nd overall—in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Since taking over as starter after Jimmy Garoppolo’s injury at the end of 2022, Purdy quickly made a name for himself with a perfect 5-0 record in the regular season and an impressive run to the NFC Championship Game.
He continued to build on that success in his second year, making it to the Super Bowl and earning Pro Bowl selections.
However, it’s worth noting that his performance did see a decline last season; he threw for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns in his first year, but this dropped to 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2023, coinciding with the team’s struggles that left them with a 6-11 finish in the NFC West.
Now, as the cornerstone of the team, Purdy will look to lead the 49ers back to their winning ways in the upcoming seasons.
