Pope Leo supports traditional marriage, the dignity of the unborn, and immigrants in a private speech.

The World Reacts to the Election of Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV, marking a historic moment as the first American pope, affirmed the traditional Catholic view on marriage during his first major address on May 8, expressing it as “a stable union between men and women.” This statement was made in front of the Vatican diplomatic corps, outlining a vision for a peaceful society based on family unity.

“Government leaders carry the responsibility to foster a harmonious civil society,” he noted, emphasizing that this can largely be achieved through supporting families rooted in lasting partnerships.

While Pope Leo reiterated the church’s stance against same-sex marriage, he faced criticism from conservatives. They argue he seems more welcoming to LGBTQ individuals than previous popes, with some claiming he has muddied the waters regarding the views of the faithful by acknowledging the blessings of same-sex couples.

Lou Holtz’s Call for Support

Football icon Lou Holtz urged Catholics to “defend and encourage” Pope Leo XIV. The pope, who belongs to the Augustinian Order, reaffirmed the church’s position on abortion and highlighted the importance of religious freedom, while also maintaining a focus on interfaith dialogue.

“Dignity must be upheld for everyone, particularly those in vulnerable situations,” he said, addressing issues that affect all—from the unborn to the unemployed and immigrants.

This meeting with the Vatican’s diplomatic corps, a customary protocol following a papal election, allowed him to engage with world leaders before the formal installation mass on Sunday. Notably, figures like Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to attend.

Pope Leo’s own family history as immigrants adds a personal layer to his remarks about the dignity of immigrants, potentially challenging President Donald Trump’s policies on immigration—his predecessor had often clashed with Pope Francis on similar matters.

Pope Leo’s Background and Perspectives

“My story is like that of many citizens, as a descendant of immigrants,” he reflected during his address. “Regardless of our circumstances—whether healthy or sick, employed or not—our dignity remains unchanged, as every one of us is cherished by God.”

Pope Leo’s heritage reflects a blend of cultures, with his father coming from French and Italian roots and his mother being of Spanish descent.

In concluding his address, he urged participants to remember “peace,” “justice,” and “truth” as foundational to the mission of the church and its diplomatic efforts.

“These values compel us to unite against contemporary challenges such as migration, ethically navigating artificial intelligence, and protecting our planet, rather than fostering divisions,” he noted, highlighting the need for collective commitment in addressing these issues.

Challenges like these, he argued, can only be met through cooperation and understanding among all parties.
