The trial involving Sean “Diddy” Combs related to sex trafficking has kicked off this week. Prosecutors are painting a grim picture, suggesting it involves group sex, drugs, violence, and a glamorous public image.
Much of the testimony has been quite harrowing. Kathy, Combs’ former girlfriend, spoke about being physically assaulted and feeling pressured to engage in sexual acts with strangers.
Highlights from the trial, which will continue on Monday.
Defense: While Combs may be a violent character and a swinger, he is not a sex trafficker
The defense attorney, Tenny Jelagos, took an unconventional route in her opening remarks.
She acknowledged that Combs has a reputation for volatile behavior, often triggered by alcohol, jealousy, and drugs.
Nevertheless, she maintained that these actions, while indicative of domestic violence, do not substantiate the claims of sex trafficking and assault against him.
Jelagos claimed that Combs’ sexual practices belong to a swinging lifestyle involving consenting adults, reminding the judge that “deviant” sexual preferences shouldn’t equate to sex trafficking.
“Shawn Combs is a complex individual, but this case itself is not,” she stated. “It revolves around issues of love, jealousy, affairs, and money.”
Judge views footage of the notorious hotel incident involving Kathy
The courtroom fell silent in 2016 as a security camera recording revealed Combs attacking Kathy in a hotel in Los Angeles.
The video shows Kathy in the hallway heading towards the elevator when Combs appears, kicks her, forces her back toward the hotel room, and then throws her to the ground.
Photographs displayed depicted the aftermath in the hotel hallway, with flowers strewn about and dirt smeared on walls. Later, a photo of Kathy’s swollen lips was shown as she recounted the incident.
The first witness was a former hotel security guard, Israel Flores, who testified that Combs attempted to bribe him with $100, saying, “Don’t tell anyone.” Flores responded, “I don’t want your money. Just go back to your room.”
Kathy shares details about “freak-offs”
Kathy, known as Casandra Ventura and singer of “Me&U,” testified about Combs’ obsession with voyeurism and how he orchestrated sexual events called “Freak-Offs.”
These gatherings, also referred to as “Wild King Night” or “Hotel Night,” included male sex workers, extensive drug use, and significant lubricant supplies.
“It was his fantasy,” Kathy remarked.
She described each “freak-off” involving approximately ten bottles of baby oil.
“It was quite bewildering,” she stated. “I often thought, ‘What are we doing?’ ”
Kathy recalled a specific instance where Combs became involved with a male sex worker and pressured her into painful sexual acts.
She mentioned that these “freak-offs” had become a regular occurrence for a decade, with a saying that “Freak-off has turned into a job” for her.
She felt she couldn’t say no, fearing that footage might be leaked.
The judge also heard from Daniel Philip, who claimed to be a stripper paid to have sex with Kathy but under Combs’ guidance. He testified that he saw Combs drag Kathy by her hair while she screamed.
Text messages reveal complex dynamics between Combs and Kathy
The defense sought to portray the two artists as willing participants in their sexual escapades during Kathy’s cross-examination.
“I’m always ready to surprise you,” a message from 2009 read.
However, later in that year, Kathy expressed her frustration regarding their relationship, stating she wanted more than just sex.
In a 2017 text, Kathy conveyed to Combs her concerns about their connection.
Dawn Richard recalls witnessing Combs’ violent behavior towards Kathy
A former participant in Combs’ MTV reality show testified that she had seen Combs physically assault Kathy multiple times.
Richard described a 2009 incident where Combs allegedly tried to hit Kathy with a frying pan before dragging her down the stairs by her neck.
“I was terrified—of her, and of him,” she said. “It was unlike anything I had ever witnessed.”
Richard, who later performed as part of Combs’ group, has since sued him for physical and psychological abuse, which he has denied.
