Jets Face Tough Match After Tragic Loss
As the top-seeded Jets prepare for their elimination game in Dallas, they’re grappling with the tragic news of forward Mark Scheifele’s father’s unexpected passing.
Mark’s father, Brad Shayfele, reportedly passed away suddenly overnight, as informed by Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff during a press briefing ahead of Saturday’s match against the Stars.
Interestingly, Scheifele was absent from the optional morning skate, leading to uncertainty regarding his participation in Game 6.
“We want to extend our most heartfelt condolences to Mark during this challenging time,” Cheveldayoff remarked. He also noted that Dallas coach Scott Arniel had returned to the team hotel to be with Scheifele.
The 32-year-old center is second on his team in playoff points, boasting 39 goals and six assists, and he reached a personal best of 87 points during the regular season.
Cheveldayoff further mentioned that Scheifele’s teammates were notified about the sad news on Saturday morning.
Winnipeg captain Adam Lowry expressed the team’s collective sorrow, stating, “It’s a terrible loss. It’s difficult to articulate the feelings we have for Mark and his family.”
“It’s a significant loss—like losing a mentor. You often look up to these figures,” Lowry continued. “So, there’s a lot we can do to ensure Mark feels supported as we move forward today.”
As the Jets, who claimed the President’s Trophy with the league-leading 116 points (56-22-4), aim for a road victory, they hope to push the series to a decisive Game 7 back home on Monday night.
