Investigation Underway After Explosion at Palm Springs Fertility Clinic
Authorities are looking into whether attacks are connected to a large explosion that devastated a fertility clinic and IVF lab in Palm Springs, California, on Saturday.
According to Palm Springs police, one fatality occurred after a vehicle exploded outside the reproductive center known as Desert Sun.
“It’s all about whether this is an act of terrorism or not,” said Lt. Col. William Hutchinson.
On Saturday, Mayor Ron Dejarte confirmed the death of one individual to the New York Post.
“We are still trying to determine the cause,” Dejarte mentioned. “The police and fire departments are on the scene now. Initially, there were thoughts of a helicopter crash or a gas leak, but those were dismissed. We need to ascertain the cause quickly. There was also significant damage to nearby buildings.”
One eyewitness, who was in a nearby business, described the moment the blast occurred: “It definitely felt like an explosion. So loud it almost rocked my entire being,” said Claudio Chavez, who runs a custom upholstery store close by. “I was waiting for a client; I was seated when it felt like a bomb went off.”
Chavez recounted seeing debris falling from the ceiling inside his shop. Stepping outside, he noticed the window in front of him was completely shattered. “I went toward Palm Canyon Drive, and then around to Indian Canyon, where I encountered more people and an enormous amount of smoke. It looked like half of one building had been blown away,” he added.
Reports indicate that the explosion was audible and felt by individuals nearly two miles away. As of now, details regarding injuries or potential motives remain unclear, especially whether the fertility clinic was deliberately targeted.
Moreover, officials clarified that this clinic is not linked to any community hospital in the area.
Firefighters arrived on the scene around 11 a.m. local time, as per reports.
Images and footage from the chaotic situation displayed debris and shattered glass strewn across the streets in front of the facility, with firefighters actively responding. Residents noted a strange smell lingering in the air after the explosion, as smoke rose above the town.
