Recently, President Donald J. Trump had an emotional phone call with Edan Alexander, a 21-year-old American-Israeli soldier who was just released from Hamas captivity. During this heartfelt conversation, which was publicized by the White House, Alexander expressed gratitude to Trump, saying, “You’re the only reason I’m here. You saved my life.”
This call took place while Alexander was recuperating at Tel Aviv’s Sawaraski Medical Center, shortly after he was freed from over 580 days of captivity following his abduction by Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Trump began the call with a light-hearted comment, noting that Alexander had become quite the celebrity, suggesting that he was the one deserving of attention. Throughout the call, he reiterated the U.S. commitment to ensuring the safe return of hostages, emphasizing, “You’re American and we love you.” He also acknowledged Alexander’s parents, mentioning how supportive his mother was.
Edan’s mother interjected with a warm comment, “Like a good mom!” which added a tender touch to the conversation.
This touching exchange quickly gained traction online, celebrated for its display of compassion and unity across the political spectrum. Alexander’s release was partly facilitated by senior envoys amidst growing diplomatic efforts in the U.S.
Trump has previously made it clear that freeing American civilians held abroad is a priority for his administration, with Alexander’s case being particularly pressing.
Following Alexander’s homecoming, there have been renewed calls to secure the release of other hostages still in Gaza. A group of 65 former hostages has recently sent a letter to both President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging them to expand their efforts for a comprehensive agreement aimed at the safe return of all hostages.
Netanyahu commented on the situation, noting that the success was due to both military and diplomatic pressure, a “victory combination,” he said. The White House has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this matter.
