Macron and Erdogan’s Curious Interaction
French President Emmanuel Macron and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan drew attention during the European Political Community (EPC) summit in Tirana. Recent footage shows Macron reaching out for a handshake, followed by a friendly pat on Erdogan’s hand.
However, after shaking hands, Erdogan unexpectedly held onto Macron’s fingers, which seemed to put Macron in a slightly awkward position as he attempted to free his hand. A few seconds later, Erdogan let go, and both leaders shared a laugh.
During this encounter, Erdogan remained seated while Macron stood, leading some viewers to speculate that this might have been a display of Erdogan’s dominance. Observers noted that Turkish leaders often counter Macron’s body language to assert control.
One analysis suggested, “This is a power move by Erdogan. By ignoring Macron’s actions, he reinforces his stance. He has a reputation for his strategic maneuvers with global leaders, while Macron often tries to assert his superiority.”
In addition, Turkish media outlet Sabah remarked that Macron seemed to be aiming for a psychological edge by placing his hand on Erdogan’s shoulder, a gesture that Erdogan didn’t accept. Meanwhile, a report from Russian media labeled the interaction a power play, noting that Erdogan’s refusal to get up from his seat was telling.
This interaction occurs against a backdrop of diplomatic tensions between France and Turkey, particularly concerning NATO’s expansion and responses to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Macron has taken a strong stance against Russian aggression in Europe, while Erdogan has sought to mediate between conflicting parties. Interestingly, Turkey remains the only NATO member not included on Russia’s list of unfriendly countries.
