All Eyes Were On Me

Amit Ghose’s Experience at a London Café

Amit Ghose, a 35-year-old man from Birmingham, alleges that he was denied service at a café in London due to his physical appearance. Ghose suffers from neurofibromatosis type 1, a genetic condition that affects the way his face looks. His experience at the café was so distressing that he felt invisible, like a “ghost,” as he described it. According to reports, he recounted feeling the gaze of everyone around him, which only added to his discomfort.

Ghose recalled the moment when a café worker looked at him and abruptly stated, “Oh, we’re not serving anymore,” before turning away. It was disheartening for him. Born with neurofibromatosis, he has faced numerous challenges, including surgeries that have altered his appearance. Despite the adversity, he actively engages with children in schools, sharing motivational stories, and encourages them to accept their unique identities. Following a troubling encounter that spurred him to action, he self-published a children’s book about his experiences.

One past incident stands out for Ghose: while in a park, individuals asked him about his face. While they may have been curious, he found their reaction upsetting as laughter soon followed. His journey has been marked by bullying and negative comments, especially after having to undergo surgery to remove his left eye at a young age, which affected how he viewed himself. These experiences often led him to hide his face from others, struggling with self-acceptance for years.

A turning point for Ghose came through playing cricket at school. It allowed him to forge connections with others while focusing on his abilities rather than his appearance. However, as an adult, he still encounters unsettling reactions, such as stares and whispers in public, which can feel relentless. He shared that people point and make comments, reinforcing the challenges he faces.

His wife, Piyali, has played a significant role in helping him embrace his own identity and encouraging him to share his experiences online. Initially unsure, Ghose ventured onto TikTok in early 2023, where he gained almost 200,000 followers and millions of likes. This outreach helped him build self-acceptance and confidence. He eventually transitioned from a law career to become a full-time motivational speaker, prioritizing the support of young people.

Amit emphasizes that everyone faces their own struggles, regardless of their outward appearances. “There are no obstacles, no disabilities, no visible differences,” he says, reminding us that anxiety and challenges are universal experiences.
