‘SNL’ Takes Aim at Trump’s Middle East Trip, Speculated Departure of Lorne Michaels, and the Show’s Future in the 50th Season Finale

“Saturday Night Live” Concludes Its 50th Season

The last episode of “Saturday Night Live’s” 50th season took a more reflective tone rather than being a straightforward celebration. Scarlett Johansson, who made history as the seventh woman to host the show, used her monologue to lead a sing-along with many of the current cast members, performing a rendition to the tune of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man.”

This performance served as a look back at a busy year that included significant events and, coincidentally, a couple of notable specials. The anniversary and concert events were, I think, memorable highlights of the season.

“Sing us a song; it’s your monologue, the 50th season is done,” Johansson sang alongside Bowen Yang, Ego Nwodim, Mikey Day, and Heidi Gardner. “It’s been a long journey, and we did it together, alongside you.” Her return was a fun way to cap off the season, hinting at possible guest star appearances that aligned with this year’s lineup.

“Ladies and gentlemen, Billy Joel!” she jokingly proclaimed, before following up with, “I wrote this song myself.” It kept things light, at least, and the audience seemed to enjoy it.

Interestingly, there was no emotional acknowledgment of cast departures, so it felt less heavy. However, they did use the song to jest about Sarah Sherman’s absence. “What a fantastic season, and Sarah isn’t here. See you next year!” they sang, to which Sherman playfully queried, “Wait, what? Did you ask me?”

Colin Jost, Johansson’s husband, is front and center during the “Weekend Update” segment, sharing a humorous, awkward rapport with co-anchor Michael Che.

This year, Johansson became a favored target for many of Che’s jokes, leading to Jost’s somewhat awkward apology about earlier remarks comparing parts of her body to “Costco Roast Beef.” You can’t help but chuckle at the absurdity!

The 50th season sparked quite a chatter, especially considering the chatter around Lorne Michaels possibly stepping down. Some speculated whether Jost might take over if that were to happen. “For SNL’s 50th season, I just want to say something to the boss,” Jost said. “Lorne, retire already! Let me take the reins.”

Jost also humorously revealed his feelings for Yang, confessing to Nwodim and Gardner about Johansson’s supposed obsession with him—turning her keen interest into a comedic running gag throughout the episode.

There were additional hijinks, including a behind-the-scenes bit that revealed Johansson being surprised by Yang and his connections, casting a funny light on the typical dramatic tropes.

Featured musical guest Bad Bunny took on the role of an air traffic controller, navigating through his first day solo, which added a touch of humor to the episode.

As usual, James Austin Johnson reprised his impression of former President Donald Trump during the cold open. In a twist, his Trump character humorously “found love” with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, breaking the fourth wall in a playful way. “It’s the ‘SNL’ finale—season 50, the worst thing ever!” he quipped. “If we still have a country, see you again in the fall. It’s a toss-up.”
