Cooper Flagg Emerges as Top Prospect in 2025 NBA Draft
Cooper Flagg, the Duke Forward, is anticipated to be the number one pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. This is hardly surprising given his impressive freshman performance, where he recorded an average of 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and noteworthy defensive stats, showcasing him as a leading college basketball talent.
With his ability to contribute offensively and defensively, Flagg is seen as a foundational piece for the Dallas Mavericks.
However, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith brought up a significant point beyond just Flagg’s talent. He suggests that race plays a role in how Flagg is perceived as a top prospect. Smith pointed out that being a white player in America comes with certain advantages.
Jason Whitlock shared a clip of Smith, discussing the Mavericks’ expectations to draft Flagg. “You get someone with that potential, and when they’re white in America, you’re going to protect that guy,” Smith remarked. He added that, particularly in Dallas, landing a talent like Flagg would be crucial for the team.
Smith elaborated on Flagg’s marketability and compared him to Larry Bird, highlighting the prominence of white American superstars in the NBA.
“ESPN is clearly factoring in the business side of race, much like other media outlets,” Whitlock commented. He questioned why there seems to be an inclination toward race-related narratives in sports coverage.
“To me, sports should be purely merit-based. The best players ought to be selected regardless of their background,” said Jay Skapinac, a contributor on “Fearless.” He added that the conversation often strays into racial territory, which can detract from the core of sports.
