Ukrainian President Meets with US Officials on Peace Negotiations
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Sunday to talk about prospects for a peace conference with Russia, as the Trump administration seeks to mediate a ceasefire in the ongoing conflict that has lasted three years.
In a statement, Zelensky highlighted that during a briefing with US officials on Friday, he outlined discussions with the Russians in Istanbul. He categorized the Kremlin’s call for a permanent ceasefire as “unrealistic,” accusing Russia of not adhering to the terms of a proposed ceasefire.
The Ukrainian president pointed out that the fact Russian President Vladimir Putin sent lower-level officials to the negotiations indicated a lack of serious commitment on his part to make any decisions.
“Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that this behavior reflects Moscow’s unwillingness to end the war, underscoring the necessity for outside pressure to compel Russia into agreeing to a comprehensive and unconditional ceasefire,” he stated.
Initially, Putin had suggested a meeting in Istanbul following US prompting for a 30-day ceasefire. Zelensky accepted these conditions and expressed a desire to meet face-to-face with Putin, but ultimately, the two did not connect directly—only lower-ranking officials attended the talks.
While both parties agreed on prisoner exchanges, they left the discussions considerably farther apart on the path to a ceasefire than they had been before the meeting.
During his remarks on Sunday, Zelensky shared that he also discussed potential “strong sanctions against Russia” with US officials and provided insights about the ongoing war situation.
In his address, Zelensky assured US officials that “Ukraine is fully supportive of all proposals from the US and is maintaining a constructive dialogue aimed at achieving a fair and lasting peace.”
President Trump stated he plans to speak with Putin on Monday before having a follow-up conversation with Zelensky.
“Hopefully, it will be a fruitful day, leading to a ceasefire and ultimately putting an end to this very violent conflict, one that could have been avoided,” he remarked.
Zelensky also mentioned he had talked about the “implementation” of the Ukraine-US economic partnership agreement and informed US officials that he had forwarded President Trump’s proposals concerning defense and trade collaboration.
