A 25-year-old man is suspected to be behind an explosion that occurred at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, over the weekend. The individual, Edward Burtos, from Twentynine Palms, is believed to have died in the blast, which also injured four other people and caused damage to several nearby businesses.
During a press conference on Sunday, Palm Springs Police Chief Andrew Mills remarked, “The man who intended to hurt others in our town yesterday failed. Palm Springs survives, and as a result, we are stronger and more resilient.”
Akil Davis, assistant director of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, described the incident as “one of the biggest bombing investigations we’ve done in Southern California.” He noted that Burtos wasn’t previously known to the FBI.
Reports indicate that Burtos utilized an improvised explosive device that he transported in a 2010 Ford Fusion Sedan.
“Subjects had nihilistic ideas, and this was a targeted attack,” Davis stated, adding that it seems Burtos might have tried to livestream the event. “Yes, that’s part of our research,” he confirmed.
Davis also mentioned that authorities were reviewing a “manifesto” which Burtos allegedly wrote prior to the bombing.
