Former President Joe Biden’s office announced on Sunday that he has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer and is currently exploring treatment options with his doctor.
Recently, Biden experienced increased urinary symptoms, prompting a doctor’s visit where a prostate nodule was discovered. Following further evaluation, his office stated that he received a diagnosis of prostate cancer, which has unfortunately spread to the bone.
Detecting prostate cancer early can be effective, yet it’s noteworthy that it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men. The American Cancer Society reports that many men are diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lives.
Understanding Prostate Cancer
The prostate is an essential part of the male reproductive system, responsible for producing fluid in semen. It is located beneath the bladder and surrounds the tube that transports urine and semen through the urethra and out of the penis.
Severity of Biden’s Cancer
Given that Biden’s cancer has spread to the bone, it is considered more serious than localized or early-stage prostate cancer. According to Dr. Matthew Smith from Brigham Cancer Center in Massachusetts, advancements in treatment mean that many patients can manage metastatic prostate cancer effectively.
“While it’s very treatable, it isn’t always easy to cure,” Dr. Smith remarked.
Treatment Options
Treatment for prostate cancer often includes medications that can lower hormone levels in the body or impede the progression of cancer cells. These drugs can slow down the growth of cancer.
Dr. Smith noted that most men in a similar situation typically aren’t recommended to undergo medication but instead may choose surgery or radiation therapy.
What is a Gleason Score?
The aggression of prostate cancer is evaluated using a Gleason score, which ranges from 6 to 10. Cancers with scores of 8, 9, and 10 are seen as more aggressive. According to Biden’s office, he received a score of 9, indicating a high level of aggressiveness.
