Scottie Scheffler won the PGA Championship using a backup driver

Scotty Schaeffler’s Driver Update

In Charlotte, N.C., Scotty Schaeffler disclosed that following his victory at the PGA Championship on Sunday, the USGA conducted an unexpected test on his main driver. The results labeled it as non-compliant, similar to Rory McIlroy’s situation.

This situation forced Schaeffler to resort to using his backup driver for the tournament. “Driver testing is a standard procedure on tour, but I’ve had issues with mine this week,” he mentioned. “I’ve been using that driver for over a year, so, well, it’s a bit frustrating.”

Meanwhile, McIlroy has been notably uncommunicative with the media after each round. It appears he was frustrated by reports that his driver was also considered a misfit.

Addressing the testing process, Schaeffler remarked, “If you’re examining drivers, I think the methodology for testing needs to be more rigorous.” He seemed to suggest that letting players handle some of these matters could lead to better understanding.

“If you only test a fraction of the players… much like the existing rules in golf, effective oversight is crucial. But I think there’s some misunderstanding about how the rules apply.”
