CNN Anchor’s Comments on Biden Spark Debate
A recent statement from CNN anchor Jake Tapper regarding President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline has raised eyebrows, especially in light of his network’s coverage during the upcoming 2024 presidential election.
Tapper noted that Biden had ignored Hollywood figure George Clooney, a notable Democratic supporter, at a high-profile fundraising event in Los Angeles last year. Reports suggest Biden struggled to articulate his thoughts, forcing former President Barack Obama to take the lead in the conversation.
This incident, which gained traction online, featured a clip of Biden seemingly “frozen” on stage, later followed by Obama escorting him off. Tapper’s remarks during a CNN segment last week were in support of a new book that delves into alleged cover-ups surrounding Biden’s inauguration.
“The Biden White House used the term ‘cheap fake’ when clips surfaced online and raised questions,” Tapper said, referring to how the administration frequently dismissed videos highlighting Biden’s unusual behavior as falsehoods. “It wasn’t an actual video,” he added.
Tapper’s Reporting Under Scrutiny
In the weeks before a particularly troubled debate performance, videos of Biden showcased him in awkward situations. Critics pointed out moments where he appeared to lose his composure, such as during celebrations at the White House and at the G-7 summit, culminating in that LA fundraiser incident.
The Biden administration strongly rejected the notion of “cheap fakes,” labeling such claims as disinformation spread by political adversaries. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated last June, “They’re maliciously manipulating this footage.”
Media Coverage and Political Fallout
Some CNN reporters echoed the Biden White House narrative. White House correspondent Arlett Sanes highlighted Biden as simply “taking a moment to watch the crowd” after his encounter with Obama.
In a panel discussion, CNN commentator Jamal Simmons referred to the fundraiser incident as “an obviously selected video.” He pushed back against the narrative that undermined Biden’s capabilities.
On a different program, Saenz labeled Biden’s appearance at the G-7 as a “selectively, incorrectly cropped video,” emphasizing the distortion of news that shapes public perception ahead of the election.
Concerns About Misinformation
CNN’s Chief Media Analyst Brian Stelter voiced fears regarding the rise of misleading media and its potential impact on the election outcome. “We’ve been concerned about AI deepfakes for a while now,” he remarked, “but these ‘cheap fakes’ are also problematic.” He underscored that the narratives constructed around Biden were harmful and misleading.
In a segment, CNN anchor Dana Bash acknowledged her hesitation about discussing the Biden videos and referenced the advice of Barbra Streisand regarding misinformation, advocating for caution in amplifying such narratives.
One of Biden’s staunchest defenders at CNN, Oliver Darcy, has left the network since highlighting the right’s conspiracy theories about Biden before the debate. Just days prior, Darcy penned a piece denouncing this narrative, suggesting it framed Biden in an unjust light.
As Tapper and his co-author Alex Thompson prepare to release their book, “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline, Cover-up, and His Disastrous Choices,” CNN has yet to respond to inquiries regarding this evolving story.
