Bangladeshi Actor Portraying Sheikh Hasina Imprisoned in Murder Attempt Case

Actor Nusrat Faria Remains in Judicial Custody

In Dhaka, Bangladeshi actor Nusrat Faria, who was arrested on Sunday, will continue to be held in custody after a judicial ruling from the district court. This morning, Faria appeared in court under heavy security. Notably, she is recognized for portraying former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a biopic.

The actor’s legal team intends to seek bail, with a court hearing for this application scheduled on May 22nd.

Her arrest occurred at Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, and it is connected to an attempted murder case. This incident is tied to the protests that led to the temporary removal of the government led by Sheikh Hasina last year.

Reports from local media indicate that Faria had plans to fly to Thailand but was detained at the airport.

Faria gained fame for her role in the film “Mujib the Native,” directed by renowned filmmaker Sham Benegal. The film, co-produced by Bangladesh and India, also features actor Arifin Shubou in a significant role.

The interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus has been focusing on individuals such as actors, scholars, artists, and journalists who had affiliations with the previous Awami Federation government. There are concerns regarding the treatment of those perceived to be supportive of the former regime. With the current administration, there has been a noted increase in platforms for radical voices, raising fears of a shift towards Islamic extremism.

In the past month alone, at least 137 journalists have been involved in various incidents related to protests against the Awami League government, with many facing charges alongside the former prime minister.

Civil rights organizations are highlighting issues of potential abuse of power by the interim government, which was put in place to manage governance until a new, democratically elected body can take over through elections.
