Dave Portnoy discusses WNBA’s investigation into reported hateful remarks towards Angel Reese

Portnoy Denies Allegations of Hate Comments Against Angel Reese

Dave Portnoy, founder of Barstool Sports, has responded to claims that “hate comments” were aimed at Angel Reese during a recent matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.

The WNBA initiated an investigation following the game on Saturday. Reports indicated that remarks were made towards Reese, who plays for the Sky. The league expressed strong disapproval of any form of racism or discrimination.

Portnoy, who was courtside during the game, raised doubts about the authenticity of the comments, suggesting that they might have originated from internet trolls. He reflected on his experience at Gainbridge Field House, where he observed a generally welcoming atmosphere.

In a video shared on his X account, he mentioned that the only “hate” he witnessed was directed at Caitlin Clark after a foul she committed against Reese. The incident led Reese to express her displeasure, but Portnoy noted Clark received a foul for it, asserting there was no malicious intent behind the play.

“Honestly, I was there. If there were any racist remarks, it would have stood out,” Portnoy stated. “The crowd was filled with families and fans just enjoying the game. Are they really saying that there was hostility focused on Angel Reese?”

He added that claiming otherwise would undermine the league’s credibility, especially without any supporting evidence. He questioned the decision to launch an investigation based on what he considered unfounded rumors circulating online.

Portnoy emphasized that while he appreciates Reese’s competitive spirit, he felt it was fair for her to be booed during the game, given the circumstances. He also mentioned the importance of light being shed on the ongoing situation and the WNBA’s recognition of its star players.

The Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA) has also acknowledged the reports regarding hateful comments and supports the WNBA’s investigation, stating that such behavior is unacceptable in basketball.

Adam Fox, the CEO of the Sky, urged the league to take actionable steps toward ensuring a safe environment for players, reflecting the sentiments shared by both teams involved.

Looking Ahead

The Sky and Fever have several more games lined up for the season, and the discussions around creating a safer space in women’s basketball will likely continue.
