The Toronto Maple Leafs’ Disheartening Legacy
This year was yet another filled with hopes dashed: the Toronto Maple Leafs once again faced disappointment. On Sunday evening, they suffered a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the Florida Panthers in front of a sellout crowd in Toronto, bringing their season to an end in the second round of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
While this early exit might seem like a familiar scenario for the Leafs, it’s particularly striking how often they’ve stumbled in the postseason. Sunday night marked their ninth consecutive season in which they reached the playoffs but were eliminated in the first or second rounds. This pattern is notable, especially considering that the team has not advanced to the conference finals in over two decades.
If it feels bleak, well, it might just get worse.
Examining the North American major professional sports landscape—NFL, NBA, MLB, WNBA, and the NHL—the Maple Leafs have the dubious honor of having the most playoff appearances without clinching a championship in the last 50 years.
- NHL: Toronto Maple Leafs – 32 playoff berths, 6 conference championship appearances, 0 Stanley Cup final appearances, 0 championships
- NFL: Minnesota Vikings – 26 playoff berths, 6 conference championship appearances, 1 Super Bowl appearance, 0 championships
- NBA: Atlanta Hawks – 31 playoff berths, 2 conference championship appearances, 0 NBA Finals appearances, 0 championships
- MLB: Milwaukee Brewers – 10 playoff berths, 2 league championship appearances, 1 World Series appearance, 0 championships
- WNBA: Connecticut Sun – 17 playoff berths, 11 conference championship appearances, 2 WNBA Finals appearances, 0 championships
Some might argue that the Vikings hold the title for the most tortured franchise in sports, but at least they’ve made it to the Super Bowl four times, only to fall short. The nature of football, being a single elimination format, allows for upsets; a great team can have an off day and still bounce back. Meanwhile, the best-of-seven series in hockey truly gives a strong team the chance to showcase their skills.
Yet, with the Leafs, the failures persist.
Since their first playoff appearance in 1968, the Leafs have only managed to advance beyond the first or second rounds six times out of 36 attempts. This statistic paints a painful picture: a 57-year-old fan from Toronto has witnessed the team in the playoffs 63% of the time, but the reality of winning it all feels more like a distant 16% chance.
Additionally, in that same period, the Leafs secured a top finish in the Eastern Conference ten times. They were among the best teams in hockey repeatedly, only to watch opportunities slip away. Over their first 50 years, the Leafs claimed 12 Stanley Cup Championships, but the past half-century has been filled with disappointments.
As hockey remains a significant part of Toronto’s identity, fans are left hoping for a return to the team’s brilliance that lasted from 1917 to 1967. With each game, the hope is rekindled, but it often feels like a heartbreak waiting to happen.
It’s disheartening.
