President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a two-hour conversation on Monday regarding efforts to end the ongoing war in Ukraine. Both leaders referred to the call as “frank” and “useful,” yet it remains unclear what concrete outcomes were achieved.
Trump expressed optimism over social media, suggesting that “Russia and Ukraine will soon begin negotiations for a ceasefire and, more importantly, toward the end of the war.” However, shortly after this announcement, Russia launched drone attacks on Ukraine.
He added that, “The terms will be negotiated between the two parties for as long as possible, as we know the details of the negotiations that no one else notices.” Following the call, Putin remarked that “a ceasefire with Ukraine is possible,” though he emphasized the need for Russia and Ukraine to reach a mutually acceptable compromise.
Despite negotiations taking place in Turkey last week, specifics about these potential compromises remain vague. Reports indicated a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from areas like Kherson, Donetsk, and Luhansk. This would follow claims from Ukrainian delegates that they had received “unacceptable” demands from Russian officials.
Furthermore, the Russian side apparently requested that the international community not only recognize these territories as part of Russia but also halt all aid to Ukraine, including plans to dispatch peacekeeping forces once the conflict concludes.
This is a developing story; updates are expected.
