Human traffickers involved in 100 mph border pursuits given prison sentences

Guilty Sentences for Texas Gang Members in Human Smuggling Case

Two gang members from South Texas have received prison sentences for their roles in human smuggling, an operation that involved several high-speed chases at the border. In one incident, one of the members crashed into the Rio Grande and managed to swim to Mexico to escape authorities.

A Monday statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) identified the individuals as Juan Miguel Legalad, 28, and Samuel Grajeda, Jr., 21, both connected to the local gang, Puro Tango Blast.

On May 15, they were convicted of conspiracy to transport undocumented immigrants following a joint investigation by ICE, the U.S. Border Patrol’s Laredo Sector, and the Texas Public Safety Agency.

U.S. District Judge John Kazen sentenced Legalad to 66 months, while Grajeda was previously sentenced to 30 months plus an additional six months. Both will be subject to a three-year supervised release upon their release from prison.

Both men confessed to their involvement in the smuggling operation.

ICE’s statement revealed that the investigation commenced on April 20, 2024, when a group of suspected undocumented migrants entered a Green Tahoe in the border area just north of Laredo, Texas.

During the chase, Legalad, who was driving, reached speeds nearing 100 mph, prompting several individuals to exit the vehicle.

After crashing the Tahoe into the Rio Grande, Legalad attempted to escape by swimming to the Mexican side.

Authorities kept a close watch on the area in the following months. In November 2024, another group of undocumented individuals were found entering a white Ford Taurus parked nearby. This vehicle was tracked until it was cut off by another vehicle driven by Grajeda and Legalad.

A traffic stop involving the Taurus led to a separate pursuit when Grajeda’s vehicle collided with a bystander’s car. Eventually, law enforcement discovered an abandoned Ford Taurus in a North Laredo neighborhood, where four undocumented immigrants, along with Grajeda and Legalad, were found nearby.

Both gang members remain in custody. Craig Laraby, a special agent in San Antonio, highlighted the severe repercussions for those involved in human smuggling, stating that such actions put public safety at risk. He also emphasized the commitment to dismantling dangerous criminal organizations while protecting local communities through strong law enforcement partnerships.
