Information on the JN.1 Variant and Impacted Nations

New Delhi:

Covid-19 is making a comeback in Southeast Asia, particularly in densely populated areas like Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Thailand, where health officials are becoming increasingly vigilant. Major cities in these regions are experiencing significant spikes in cases.

Most affected countries

Hong Kong’s Health Protection Centre has reported that the city’s virus activity is currently at a “very high” level, with respiratory samples testing positive for Covid hitting a yearly high.

Bloomberg’s report mentions that Hong Kong recorded 31 severe cases in the week ending May 3rd. While the current situation isn’t comparable to the peak infections seen in the past two years, there are rising levels of the virus detected in sewage and an uptick in related medical consultations and hospital visits, suggesting the spread of infections is indeed active in a city of over 7 million people.

In Singapore, the Ministry of Health noted a 28% jump in reported cases, bringing the total to 14,200 for the week ending May 3. Daily hospital admissions also rose by about 30%. This marks the first time in nearly a year that the Singapore government has publicly released case numbers in this manner, only doing so during noticeable surges.

The Ministry of Health stated that the rise could be linked to waning immunity among the population. However, they added that there is no evidence to suggest that the circulating variants pose greater risk or severity than those seen during the peak of the pandemic.

Thailand is seeing a similar uptick, with Covid-19 cases rising to 33,030 for the week ending May 17, nearly double the 16,000 cases reported the previous week, according to the Disease Control Agency. The highest number of cases were in Bangkok (6,290), followed by Chung Buri (2,573), Rayong (1,680), and non-Taburi (1,482).

Most infections are among people aged 30 to 39, and Thai health officials are urging high-risk groups to get booster vaccinations promptly. This surge is believed to have been accelerated by gatherings during the Song Cran Festival in April.

In China, Covid-19 positivity rates are rising as well. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that from March 31 to May 4, the positivity rate for outpatient and emergency flu cases nationwide rose from 7.5% to 16.2%. The positivity rate for hospitalized cases also increased from 3.3% to 6.3% according to Chinadaily.com.

This sudden uptick in cases is viewed as a potential warning sign, hinting at the possibility of entering a wave similar to what was experienced in China last summer.

Meanwhile, India has also noted an increase in Covid-19 cases, with the Ministry of Health and Human Services reporting 257 active cases nationwide. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely, but there are no signs of a widespread outbreak at this time.

New Variants

The surge in Covid-19 cases across Asia is largely attributed to the JN.1 variant, a subvariant of the Omicron strain. The World Health Organization (WHO) has labeled JN.1 as a “variant of interest,” although it hasn’t yet reached the level of a “variant of concern.”

This indicates that while authorities are vigilant, there is currently no definitive evidence that it leads to more severe illnesses compared to other Omicron subvariants.
