California Legislature’s Latin Caucus Criticizes Newsom’s Budget Changes
The influential Latin Caucus in California’s Legislature has expressed strong disapproval of Governor Gavin Newsom’s new budget proposal. They are particularly critical of his shift in policy regarding Medi-Cal, the state’s version of Medicaid, aimed at providing free healthcare to undocumented immigrants.
According to reports from Breitbart News, the governor’s revised stance is being viewed as a needed adjustment, especially given that California has accumulated substantial debt since last year when it expanded access to “free” healthcare for all undocumented residents.
To address budget shortfalls, Newsom’s updated 2025-26 budget suggests a reduction of around $5 billion by prohibiting new undocumented immigrants from accessing Medi-Cal.

Newsom’s earlier policy on offering free healthcare to undocumented individuals has pushed Medi-Cal to a financial brink. Earlier this year, the program had to borrow over $6 billion to remain solvent.
This situation has ignited political repercussions, with Latino leaders accusing Newsom of betraying their trust as he seems more concerned with his presidential aspirations.
The Los Angeles Times reported that Latin lawmakers slammed Newsom’s proposed Medi-Cal cuts, interpreting the plan to freeze premiums for adult immigrants without documentation as a violation of California’s commitment to safeguard its vulnerable populations.
In a comment, San Francisco Chronicle journalist Joe Garofoli compared Newsom’s reversal on healthcare to his changing views on transgender athletes in women’s sports, noting that LGBTQ+ activists, who have been critical supporters of his since he became San Francisco’s first openly gay mayor, are also feeling neglected.
Garofoli pointed out that a recent poll indicates many California voters perceive Newsom as too focused on a potential presidential bid in 2028 rather than addressing pressing state issues. He mentioned that Newsom has recently prioritized national headlines over local concerns, including making calls to ban homeless encampments in the city.
“Many Californians are beginning to wonder if Newsom is genuinely acting in their best interests or simply preparing for tomorrow’s headlines. Trust in the governor seems to be eroding,” Garofoli added.
