New book ‘Original Sin’ uncovers when Kamala Harris’s campaign ended its connection with Biden

Kamala Harris appeared visibly shaken when President Joe Biden donned a “Trump 2024” hat during a visit to a fire station in Pennsylvania, an unusual moment amid last year’s presidential election excitement.

While commemorating the 23rd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks at the Shanksville Fire Station, Biden, who is now 82, posed for photos with a group of young individuals sporting pro-Trump attire.

Upon witnessing the scene, Harris questioned, “What is he doing?” This was after Biden officially launched his reelection campaign on July 21. She recounted the incident, sharing her thoughts in her forthcoming book, “Original Sin,” co-written with Jake Tupper and Alex Thompson.

Harris further remarked that the situation felt “completely useless” and “very unnecessary.”

Following this event, the Democratic campaign decided to steer clear of public appearances with Biden before the November 5 election, yet his not-so-favorable presence continued to shadow the campaign.

The authors Tupper and Thompson highlight that Harris’ advisors often embraced a lighthearted approach, which they referred to as “Gawes’ humor,” especially during Biden’s missteps—like the time he told party supporters at a New Hampshire campaign office, “we have to lock him up,” in reference to the former president and current Republican candidate.

In contrast, the book notes that Biden observed figures like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama on the campaign trail and expressed a desire to emulate their media presence, though it seems he misjudged how he came across.

“Original Sin” is now available.
