Trump Honors Fallen Florida Officers with Medal of Sacrifice
During a ceremony at the White House on May 19, 2025, President Donald Trump awarded the Presidential Honorary Medal to the families of three Florida law enforcement officers who lost their lives while on duty. This was the inaugural “Medal of Sacrifice” event.
The recipients included Corporal Lewis Paes Jr., Deputy Sheriff Ralph “Butch” Waller Jr., and Deputy Sheriff Ignacio “Dan” Diaz, who all served in the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. Tragically, they were killed in an accident on November 21, 2024, after being struck by an SUV while assisting a distress call.
“Today, we also remember three notable heroes who will be the first medal winners, and that’s a great honor,” Trump stated, acknowledging their bravery.
“It was a terrible tragedy. The entire Palm Beach community was shaken like few events I’ve seen,” he added, reflecting on the impact of their loss. “Today we are honoring these incredible patriots who were taken from us far too soon.”
Waller, Paes, and Diaz were engaged in roadside assistance when the incident occurred. They were working to fix a patrol bike following a traffic stop when the SUV, passing through slower-moving traffic, lost control.
Pae’s son, Cameron, shared his feelings with reporters after accepting the award on behalf of his father. “I saw my dad as a superman,” he said, expressing admiration and highlighting the impact on their families. “It’s scary how this happened to all three families, but I’m grateful that something is being done.”
Diaz, 51, was remembered for his dedication to the community over two decades, and Waller, at 54, was known for his charm and infectious smile.
Trump expressed deep gratitude towards the families for their sacrifices, stating, “We will never forget their legacy, and we owe a debt to all of these great law enforcement heroes who gave their lives to keep our communities safe.”
