Supreme Court Permits MP Laurel Libby to Vote Again
The Supreme Court has reinstated the voting rights of MP Laurel Libby, who faced scrutiny over a social media post that criticized “transgender athletes” competing in women’s sports. This decision came after Libby appealed to the court, which had stepped in back in April.
Libby’s argument highlighted that Democratic House Speaker Ryan Fecto had barred her from both speaking and voting until she renounced her opinions. In her emergency petition, she noted that thousands of constituents in Maine’s House District 90 were being stripped of their representation and voice in legislative matters.
“They won’t have a say in the state’s $11 billion budget, any proposed constitutional amendments, or even in the law suggesting changes to the current policy for transgender athletes,” the petition explained, underscoring the disenfranchisement of her constituents.
