Louisiana prisoners deal with new charges following escape from Orleans Justice Center jail

Inmates Escape from New Orleans Jail

Law enforcement in Louisiana has shared new booking images of four inmates who escaped from a New Orleans prison amid new charges. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety has released these pre-order photos featuring Kendel Miles, Robert Moody, Gary Price, and Dokentan Dennis, while six inmates are still unaccounted for.

Price was apprehended on Monday and faces charges for simple escape, unauthorized entry into his residence, and possession of a controlled substance. His initial charges included attempted first-degree murder and domestic abuse.

Miles was charged with simple escape back on May 16 after being discovered hidden under a car in a hotel parking lot. Meanwhile, both Moody and Dennis also face charges related to simple escape, according to a spokesperson from the Louisiana State Police.

In a related development, an Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office employee, Sterling Williams, was arrested on Tuesday. He is accused of aiding ten inmates in fleeing the prison.

Williams stated that the inmates didn’t escape on their own; instead, he claimed that they received help from others. Allegedly, he feared for his safety, saying that the escaped inmates threatened him if he didn’t assist them.

As the investigation continues, updates are expected regarding the circumstances. Attorney General Liz Murrill emphasized that those involved will be held accountable. She encouraged anyone with information to come forward.

One of the escapees, Derrick Groves, who previously killed two men during a Mardi Gras event in 2018, remains at large.

Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged her role in the escape, expressing concern for community safety and asserting that the incident occurred under her leadership. In her words, “This violation happened on my watch, and it’s my responsibility to address it with urgency and transparency.”

Currently, several fugitives are still at large, including:

  • Corey E. Boyd, 19, facing charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder.
  • Renton J. Vanbren Jr., 26, for illegal firearm possession and obstruction of justice.
  • Jermaine Donald, 42, with charges including second-degree murder.
  • Antoine Massey, 32, facing domestic abuse and theft-related charges.
  • Derrick Groves, 27, with multiple counts including attempted murder.
  • Leo O. Tate Sr., 31, for robbery, firearm possession, and drug counts.
