Lawler on Tax Reform: A Focus on Constituents
Representative Mike Lawler (R-NY) stated on Tuesday during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Story” that he would not compromise the interests of his constituents by voting for a bill that lacks key provisions, including local tax (SALT) deductions established under President Donald Trump.
“I’m one of only three Republicans who managed to win in a district that went for Kamala Harris. I know my district inside out and have a strong motivation to achieve positive results,” Lawler remarked.
He expressed respect for the President, acknowledging the critical need to pass the proposed legislation. However, he warned that the potential tax cuts could lead to the largest tax hike in U.S. history. “I can’t let my constituents down and engage in bad faith negotiations. After we conclude this, our goal should be to create a fair tax system,” he emphasized.
Lawler highlighted the struggles of local professionals, noting that many, including police officers and teachers, are burdened by what he described as the highest tax rates in America. “We need to work for a fair tax deal,” he concluded.
