Comey Addresses Controversial Instagram Post
Former FBI Director James Comey addressed the fallout from his Instagram post that featured shells arranged to spell “86 47.” In an interview on MSNBC, he clarified that the post was not meant to imply any threats or malice. He further asserted that he feels no danger from the Trump administration.
Comey’s latest book hit shelves on May 20, 2025, where he claimed critics from both ends of the political spectrum have been trying to provoke him for media attention and book sales.
The Instagram post, which sparked controversy, was shared last Thursday. The term “86,” commonly used to mean eliminate something, has drawn criticism from conservatives who see the image as a threat, especially given Comey’s strained history with GOP presidents since Trump dismissed him in 2017. However, Comey insisted that his aim was to make a peaceful expression rather than a violent one.
Nicole Wallace, MSNBC: “Did you regret posting the photo?”
Comey: “I regret the distraction and the controversy… but I don’t think I can fully regret something that seems innocent to me.” He reflected on his past with Trump, saying, “I’ve been investigated a lot since his firing, so this isn’t my first rodeo.” He described that he was in a different mindset when he posted the photo, seeing it as simply expressing a thought.
Comey mentioned that his wife is the one who noticed the shell while leaving the beach, and the term “86” reminded her of her days as a waitress when it signified removing items from a menu. He recalled that as a child, he understood the phrase to mean leaving a place.
Comey: “I didn’t view it as political speech. I thought it was a creative way to express some views… The colors matched nicely, making it visually interesting.”
In response to speculation about potential government actions against him, a representative from the Trump administration remarked that Comey seems to have an ongoing fixation with Trump.
Comey’s recent comments have drawn attention and scrutiny, as they appear to mix personal reflection with sharp political rivalry. The Secret Service has reached out for clarification regarding the perceived threats, with FBI Director Kash Patel noting that they are coordinating with the Secret Service on this matter.
Having formally identified as a Republican, Comey has voiced his support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in both the 2020 and 2024 elections. Following the controversy over his Instagram post, Trump called Comey a “dirty cop.”
