Google Expands AI Features in Search
On Tuesday, Google announced significant enhancements to its online search capabilities, incorporating more generative artificial intelligence amid worries about its ad-driven business model.
During the annual developer event, CEO Sundar Pichai introduced a new AI mode for Google Search, claiming that “decades of research” have culminated in this advanced technology. This updated mode surpasses the already existing AI summaries, which present AI-generated answers above typical blue links.
“This new AI mode completely rethinks search with more sophisticated inference,” Pichai remarked, kicking off the conference in Silicon Valley.
Users can now pose longer, more complex questions and delve deeper with follow-up inquiries. Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, elaborated on the features of this newly launched mode, highlighting its ability to undertake extensive searches across the web, far beyond what traditional search methods offer.
Since the introduction of the AI Overview in Search Results last year, Pichai noted that it has reached over 1.5 billion users globally. “Google Search is bringing Gen AI to more people than any other product,” he said. Users seem increasingly satisfied with the AI outputs, leading to higher search frequencies in major markets like the US and India.
However, there are some concerns among analysts. The shift from traditional blue links to AI-driven summaries raises questions about reduced opportunities for ad placements, which are central to Google’s revenue.
News organizations and website publishers, notably Wikipedia, have raised alarms due to significant drops in traffic, as Google’s search links have historically been critical for internet access.
In federal court, Apple’s Eddy Cue pointed out that Google’s search traffic on Apple devices declined in April, marking the first such fall in over two decades. Cue indicated that Google has lost ground to AI competitors like ChatGPT, which has negatively impacted Google’s stock.
He went on to mention the possibility of Apple introducing its own AI alternatives as the default search option for devices, which could pose a serious threat to Google’s advertising revenue.
This testimony is part of a crucial trial that may lead to federal judges determining whether Google must sell its main business, following rulings regarding illegal monopolies in search engines.
At the conference, Google aims to cultivate relationships with app developers and online services while showcasing its AI innovations, such as real-time voice translation and personalized shopping experiences based on user photos.
Executives indicated that Google is working on integrating agent functionalities into services like Chrome and Gemini AI apps. “All of this will continue to improve,” Pichai expressed, emphasizing how these advancements make the web more engaging.
Additionally, Google revealed that its top-tier AI tools could be accessed through a $250 monthly subscription plan dubbed “Ultra.”
