As the murder charges continue against Rodney Hinton Jr., there’s a growing sense of unease just a day after his son, who was accused of killing a retired sheriff’s deputy, was shot dead by police.
In contrast to the outpouring of support for Carmelo Anthony, a teenager charged with murder in Texas, supporters of Hinton Jr. are labeling him a “hero” and a “saint.” Some have even referred to him as “Father of the Year.”
“He feels good about what he did and walks with his head held high in court,” said one supporter. “He defended his son in the only way he knew how.”
On May 2, authorities reported that Hinton Jr. was present at the Cincinnati Police Station to view bodycam footage of the fatal police shooting of his son, Ryan Hinton. A detective testified that Hinton Jr. reacted emotionally to the video, which led him to Deputy Larry Henderson, the retired sheriff, on that day.
Henderson eventually succumbed to his injuries, leading to Hinton Jr. being charged with murder. Authorities allege this was an act of retaliation for his son’s death at the hands of the police. Hinton Jr. is currently incarcerated and has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer has commented that the perception of the situation may be viewed as unjust. The trial is scheduled to proceed later this year or early 2026, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty.
Despite facing criticism, Hinton Jr. has garnered a notable following.
A post on social media that has amassed 4 million views shows Hinton Jr. exiting the courtroom, tilting his head, almost defiantly. “Dad’s revenge. Keep your chin up!” it states.
Another post alongside a different video captures Hinton Jr.’s supporters waving at him in court; his reaction appeared satisfied and rebellious. This post has received over 350,000 views.
Some reactions include:
- “Rodney Hinton Jr. did what he had to do,” commented one user.
- “He’s a hero,” stated another. “This is the energy we need when state-sanctioned violence occurs against our own.”
- “Look, if the police killed my kid… I’d retaliate too,” shared another user. “Rodney Hinton Jr. is a saint.”
- “His actions are understandable from a parent faced with violence,” expressed another. “I can’t say he isn’t justified.”
Nonetheless, all the support for Hinton Jr. only scratches the surface compared to the wider arguments surrounding him.
Cultural critic Toure remarked on social media, “Black individuals losing their children to police violence… Hinton Jr. took action in a way that reflects a response to systemic injustices.” He compared Hinton Jr. to historical figures of protest, suggesting that both are reactions to a system perceived as oppressive.
Another user posted a video reflecting on the murder of Deputy Henderson, questioning the societal narrative: “It’s tragic, of course, but what did they expect? There’s a bigger picture here.” This clip has received significant attention, with users debating its implications.
Activists are noting a growing awareness among Black individuals regarding self-defense and familial protection, reflecting a shift in societal attitudes toward racial violence: “People are tired of injustice and are willing to fight back, which isn’t surprising given current circumstances,” stated one activist.
In another viral video, an individual warns, “What Rodney Hinton did is a message to the next officer. They need to think twice.” The video has garnered over 440,000 views, resonating with many who feel frustrated with the current state of law enforcement.
Support continues as a TikTok user declares, “You took his son; he took one of yours,” gaining traction with over 360,000 views. The sentiment emphasizes a cycle of violence and retribution that many feel is being overlooked.
