Jessica Simpson reveals she felt like she was ‘dying’ during her ‘train wreck’ performance on ‘American Idol’

Jessica Simpson expressed that she felt completely overwhelmed during her performance of “Train Wreck” in the finale of “American Idol” Season 23. In a conversation the following day, she shared, “Oh, my God, I was dead. I can’t even remember the last time I was this nervous.”

To battle her nerves, Simpson went as far as putting hairspray on her legs to manage the sweat. “I want to love you forever,” she joked.

She even shared that before hitting the stage, she had to have a little pep talk to keep her emotions in check. “I kept repeating, ‘Don’t cry, don’t cry. This is a big moment… I won’t cry.’ But then I’d catch a glimpse of my dad, Joe, and think, ‘Oh no, here come the tears. Just a song, just a song,’” she recalled.

During the live show, three mothers, including Simpson, took to the stage, marking her first live performance on television in 15 years. She initially joined former contestant Josh King to perform Nancy Sinatra’s classic “These Boots Are Made for Walking,” followed by her latest single, “Blame Me.”

However, reactions from viewers were mixed. Some took to social media to criticize her performance, remarking, “She was terrifying. She wasn’t a good singer. What a train wreck.” Others defended her, saying she looked beautiful and seemed to be having a great time. “I enjoyed seeing her,” one supporter commented.

In response to the negative feedback, one user referenced Randy Jackson with, “That’s a no from me, Dawg. This isn’t a comeback.” Another viewer pointed out, “We had great performances before; this wasn’t one of them.”

On a different note, earlier this year, it was reported that Simpson’s divorce from Eric Johnson prompted her to start working on her first album in 15 years. A source mentioned that she had been creating music for a while but felt now was the right time to empower herself. “She has been journaling, and her entries about heartbreak and resilience have transformed into songs. It’s definitely been a time of both creativity and heartache,” shared the insider.
