Tate McRae’s Arena Tour Showcases Artistic Growth
During the pandemic, Tate McRae made quite the impact, shifting her career into high gear. Her recent albums, “Think Later” released in 2023 and another in February, introduced a Y2K-inspired trap pop vibe with the hit “Rittany.”
Now on her first arena tour, McRae is eager to demonstrate her hard work. In an intimate ballad segment on a smaller B stage, she revisits three older tracks. Some of these date back to her early days in the industry, when she was just 13, bringing a sense of nostalgia to her performances. There’s this feeling of a “17-year-old middle-age crisis” in the mix, along with a backdrop that features two large yellow “Tate” cranes flanking the stage. These elements rise with steel guards, creating an edgy atmosphere as McRae and her eight backup dancers seem to defy some construction site rules.
A natural on stage, McRae finds joy in her complex choreography. She excels during a recent dance break, skillfully utilizing props like a chair—reminiscent of the Pussycat Dolls—while showcasing her moves in a leopard print leotard and matching cap. The performance culminates with a striking split that captures the crowd’s attention.
However, with so much choreography, McRae doesn’t always take center stage. Her true charm shines through in more relaxed moments. One standout was a mid-tempo track where her emotional vocals resonated throughout the venue, creating an intimate atmosphere.
Clearly dedicated, McRae exhibits a work ethic that is impressive. Yet, despite her polished performance, there’s still a sense that she’s learning to make it all feel effortless.
