Incident Under the Brooklyn Bridge
A recent video captures a young woman joyfully posing beneath the Brooklyn Bridge. The footage, taken on Saturday night, shows her smiling for the camera while a large boat glides by, illuminated against the iconic structure behind her. She’s seen on a railing near the water’s edge, dressed in a white dress. At one moment, she turns to look at the incoming ship, seemingly exclaiming, “So cool!”
However, that moment of joy turned grim. Unbeknownst to her, the masts of the Cuauhtemoc training ship had collided with the bridge, leading to a disastrous outcome. The woman initially appeared to be enthralled by the scene, but as the situation unfolded, she caught sight of several crew members who were dangerously tossed about as the ship lost control.
In the chaos, she and the person filming retreated from the water’s edge, joining others who were also escaping the scene. Witnesses captured video of a woman in the same outfit running away to safety.
Tragically, two sailors lost their lives in this incident: Adal Jair Maldonado Marcos, 23, and 20-year-old América Yamilet Sánchez. Additionally, 19 others sustained injuries while investigations into the cause of the shipwreck continue. Officials reported that the Cuauhtemoc had been operating for less than five minutes before the mast struck the 142-year-old bridge. A National Road Safety Commission investigator noted that a radio call indicating trouble had come in just 45 seconds before the collision.
Whether mechanical failure contributed to the tragedy remains uncertain.
