Woman criticized for not giving her seat to a child on a plane

So, I’ve come across some difficult situations on flights.

There are folks squeezed in the middle between annoyed couples who want more space, romantic pairs holding hands across the aisle, or those who ask others to swap seats so their kids can sit with them — maybe they forgot to book a seat, who knows?

This particular scenario highlights that last group, and it’s drawing quite a bit of attention lately.

“I paid especially for that seat.”

A woman shared her experience on Reddit after a rather awkward encounter during a flight.

“I recently took a six-hour flight for work. I booked my ticket two months in advance and even paid extra for a window seat—a little reassurance since I was a bit anxious about flying.”

She boarded to find a woman, likely in her mid-30s, sitting next to her with a child around 7 or 8 years old. She gently informed the woman that she had a window seat, 21A.

However, the woman refused to move.

“I explained that I had really hoped to keep my seat because I specifically paid for it,” the woman recounted.

Despite the woman’s frustration, who claimed her son loved looking out the window, she didn’t budge after a few exchanges. “I reiterated my concerns and mentioned the extra fee I paid for the seat,” she added.

Eventually, the woman rolled her eyes and returned to her original seat, which was a couple of rows back.

She noted that the situation was uncomfortable, with her mother giving her disapproving looks later, saying she didn’t know how to be a decent person.

Now the pressing question is: did she make the wrong choice?

After discussing it with a friend, they suggested she should have just let it go for a few hours.

She’s left contemplating… am I the jerk for not giving up my window seat for a child?

“I’m glad you’re standing your ground.”

Commenters on her post flooded in with support, calling the mother in the situation unreasonable.

“If she wanted a window seat for her son, she should have booked and paid for it,” one person remarked. “Even if they offered you a refund, I’d still stick to my seat.”

Another chimed in, “A decent person wouldn’t expect someone else to give up a seat they paid for.” There was a strong sense among readers that, well, she wasn’t the problem here.

“I’ve had this exact situation once!”

Several others shared similar experiences.

One person recounted their own flight where they faced a similar demand — they had paid extra for their seat, and like the woman in the story, weren’t moving.

In fact, they had encountered a similar plea when a teenage girl was in their seat and asked to swap to sit with family.

Another thought: If you’re traveling with kids, maybe consider booking seats together or at the very least, don’t put others in an awkward spot!
